As we at About Town celebrate the start of our 30th year, we honor other area businesses that have proven their value to you year after year, one year at a time, one customer at a time. It is amazing how many are still owned and run by the same families that founded them. We are very proud to have shared the past three decades with such people.

An outstanding business in many ways – elegance, history, guest coddling, and sheer beauty – Mohonk Mountain House certainly tops our list. In addition to advertising with us since our first baby steps in the early 1980s, Mohonk existed for more than 100 years prior to us even being born.

Another of our original advertisers, The Bakery, celebrated its 30th birthday last year. It has always been a delicious and welcoming meeting spot in the center of New Paltz. Our office was a bagels throw away when we founded The Guide to New Paltz, which became About Town. The Bakery and its owner, David Santner, have always held a special place in our hearts and waistlines to this day.

P&Gs Restaurant and Bar, whose history is a story in itself, began as The Casino in 1909. It still creates that feeling of belonging in all its loyal customers, feeding not just with food, but with and overflow of good cheer and of course, Stormy’s Chili.

The Bike Rack, started more than 40 years ago, continues to roll along providing every skill level of bicyclist with high quality bikes and the safety equipment, and good advice that has made it a must for Ulster County bicyclists.

Back in the 1950s and 1960s our family would eat at Emile’s – today the Mountain Brauhaus. It is still run by the same wonderful Ruoff family, though a few generations younger! Consistently great food, conscientious wait staff, and a philosophy of old world hospitality. Guarantees: You won’t go away hungry. You will come back.

Don’t take a chance, call Lance! Lance’s Plumbing advertised with us from the very first year. An old girlfriend from college saw his ad and called him. He has thanked me often and said until he retires he’ll be with us because we brought him his wife. Not to mention a few plumbing jobs… including many, many of my own over the past three decades.

Dippel Surveying has been helping property owners know and protect their castles and keeps since 1972. They are a multi generational firm with deep roots in Ulster County and the valley.

Not many B&Bs have existed more than 35 years. The Bakers, Linda and Doug, at Bakers B&B can claim that. Their lovely stone home has nourished the spirit of many a sojourner – and fed them a gourmet breakfast!

Jack’s Meats and Deli, a staple in New Paltz for decades, is another family run, customer is king business providing the highest quality meats and other food, cooking advice, and about the kindest, nicest service you can find. Love them.

Bacchus Restaurant, with its greenhouse patio and adjoining billiards is known for its beer selection – 500 (how to choose?), great fresh food, and stimulating night life. It’s garnered several “Best of The Hudson Valley” awards. But it’s best recommendation? It has been making people happy since 1974!

Gourmet Pizza, an advertiser with us since 1985, is another purveyor of consistently good food. Their name perfectly describes what they are best known for. You want something different in pizza? Remember that name.

Doug Thompson’s Main Street Bistro has made me more breakfasts than my mom. Tofu Scramble…my favorite, is mouth watering. But, get there early as the line on weekends is often out the door…Fortunately, our About Town rack is by the door and you can plan your day while you wait.

Super 8 of New Paltz is near the Thruway and the Gunks. It’s been run by the same conscientious family and great manager for almost two decades. They keep it ship shape and appreciated by its loyal guests. Make your college graduation reservations early…and how about Woodstock Crafts Fair?

Colonial Flower Shop has been brightening weddings and homes for over 35 years. Its arrangements have comforted mourners and helped family and friends show respect at sad occasions around the world. Colonial has been a part of our lives for generations, in both good and sad times.
